#popeshopechallenge

Smiling-Face-Of-Pope-Francis

In preparation for our Holy Father’s visit to the United States, our local Catholic Charities has challenged all of our Catholic schools to take part in a simple yet meaningful project that will help our brothers and sisters in need right in our own neighborhoods. It’s called the ‪#‎popeshopechallenge‬.

SS. Simon & Jude Cathedral School students will commit to helping our brothers and sisters in need in our local community during the Holy Father’s visit. First, we will run a canned food drive to restock our parish St. Vincent de Paul Pantry. The pantry serves the needy right here in our own neighborhood with bags of food, diapers, etc.

Second, we are taking on a different project which will help homeless individual throughout the Valley of the Sun. We will gather supplies to bag and distribute to our school families who are interested in helping the homeless in our community. Each “Package of Hope” will have necessities such as water, snacks, and even socks. After we collect and bag the items, school and parish families can take a few bags to carry in their car to distribute to homeless individuals they see in their daily travels.

The “Package of Hope” collections will run this week, Sept 21-23. Student council and junior high students will assemble the packages Sept 24 and 25. We will include rosaries (and directions for praying the rosary). Each grade will be responsible for bringing in specific items for the care packages, including socks, healthy snacks, small toiletries and water bottles. We will also include cards from our students with messages of hope and inspiration. During the last week of September we will distribute the “care packages” to families at pickup to take and pass on this hope. It is our hope that families will then create their own care packages to continue to help those in need.

We are so thankful to have our Holy Father here in the USA – and pray that he has a safe and happy time here in our country. We are thankful for the opportunity to do good for those in our community, and we pray that the Spirit helps us to create an atmosphere of everyday kindness all across Arizona and the world.

Stay tuned this week for pictures of our #popeshopechallenge!!
